About the project

About Death by War

Death by War is an independent data presentation project created to make reported human losses in armed conflicts easier to understand without hiding uncertainty.

Why the site exists

Numbers reported during war are often incomplete, revised over time and based on different definitions. A single figure rarely explains who was counted, when the deaths occurred or how the information was collected.

Death by War presents casualty figures together with their source, reporting date, definition and known limitations. The aim is not to remove uncertainty, but to make it visible.

What the site currently covers

The current conflict trackers present reported Palestinian and Israeli fatalities connected to the Israel–Gaza war and verified civilian casualties in Ukraine.

A separate historical section presents estimates from major wars. Historical estimates are shown for context and are not treated as directly comparable with current conflict trackers.

Additional conflicts are added only when a sufficiently transparent and maintainable source is available and the data can be described honestly.

Independence

Death by War is not a government agency, humanitarian organization, research institution or casualty investigation body. The project is not affiliated with the organizations whose data it presents.

Sources are credited directly. Their inclusion does not imply endorsement of every statement or position held by the reporting organization.

What Death by War does not claim

Sources and methodology

Each tracker identifies its source and explains what is included and excluded. Automated updates are validated before replacing the previous data file. If an update fails, the last valid figures remain available rather than being replaced by incomplete data.
